The Heart of Worship
“God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.” John 4:24 (NIV 1984)
How do you worship? With hands folded and head bowed? With arms raised as if to touch the clouds? With silent prayers and meditation? With knees bowed in consecration? To the beat of a drum, or a heavenly harp? Do you come to Jesus, just as you are? With a dance of praise, or a reverent gaze? Do you stand to your feet, or keep your seat? We may worship God in many ways, but only God knows the real purpose behind our praise. What matters most is not the manner, but that the man—or woman, teen or child—understands that true worship begins with a heart totally submitted to God. It is God’s Spirit that testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children (Romans 8:16, NIV1984). It is the heart that truly bows before God. Worship really is all about Him, not us.
