Church bulletin of a choir based on Psalm 66:1-2

Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands: Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious. Psalm 66:1-2

I love to watch a choir when they are into the music. It doesn’t matter if the music fits my taste or if the choir is a little off-key. When their worship is genuine, and their faces are beaming with joy, there is nothing like it!

A study came out recently that confirms we judge music not just by its sound but by the visual cues we see in a performance. Are the musicians passionate about the music? Do they show emotion consistent with the song? When we see the performers as well as hear their music, we are just as likely to use the visual cues to judge the performance.

This study will be in the back of my mind the next time I am worshipping at church. My voice may blend in with the congregation (at least I hope it does!). But does my body language show I am truly worshipping, or does it look like I just woke up and couldn’t find my coffee? The next time, I intend to make that joyful noise and show honor and praise to the Lord while I let my face and hands show they agree with my warbling!
